How to live with Kidney Disease
You might be familiar with this: I was born with Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD), and because it’s been part of my story for as long as I can remember, I learned early that waiting was not an option. Instead, I learned to show up for my body every single day.
Here’s what I’ve found works — and what I’m doing right now — to support my kidneys, live fully, feel strong, and keep moving forward on our "Live Your Way to Fit" path.
1. Guard Your Blood Pressure
Having PKD means that high blood pressure isn’t just an “adult health” issue — it’s one of the most powerful things you can control. Lowering sodium, getting good sleep, and moving regularly: these are not optional. They’re essential.
2. Dial In Your Diet
It’s not just about “eating clean.” It’s about eating smart for kidney health:
Limit salt (sodium): High sodium intake can raise blood pressure and accelerate cyst growth.
Hydration matters: Keeping fluids up helps your kidneys flush and reduces stress.
Protein and quality count: Opt for plant-based proteins when possible, and limit animal proteins to avoid kidney stress.
Healthy carbs like fruits, veggies, rice, oats, and more.
3. Move, Not Force
Movement is an ally, not an enemy. With PKD, I do strength training & choose workouts where I feel strong, grounded, and aligned. Not extreme or punishing — but consistent, supportive. I hydrate well beforehand, and I tune in to my body’s signals. If something feels off (such as pain, swelling, or fatigue), I back off and check in.
4. Self-Care Isn’t Optional
When your kidneys are working overtime, self-care becomes non-negotiable:
Sleep well.
Manage stress (yes — your hormones affect your kidneys too).
Avoid smoking or excess alcohol.
Choose joy, movement, connection — because your mindset affects your system.
5. Collaborate With Your medical Team
I don’t do this alone. I work with my nephrologist and ask the bold questions & I have a coach:
“What’s my kidney function doing?"
“What adjustments should I make now, not later?"
“What’s my game plan for the next 6 months?"
I Google and read a lot.
My Takeaway for You
Having PKD doesn’t define the end of your story. It informs how you show up, how you move, how you eat, and how you show love to your body. If you’re living with PKD, you can build a life of strength, presence, movement, and good choices. And if you don’t have PKD but you know someone who does — this is a message for them: thriving isn’t just surviving. It’s owning your story.
